Know what your car needs

A wash, a correction and a coating each do a different job. Here’s what each one gets you, so you can pick with your own eyes rather than take my word for it.
A wash
Takes dirt off the surface. It doesn’t change what’s underneath — you’re just looking at clean paint instead of dirty paint. Inside, the same idea: vacuumed, surfaces wiped down, leather cleaned and conditioned.
Paint correction
Machine-polishing the clear coat to remove swirls and light scratches instead of hiding them. It takes off a fraction of the clear coat, so it isn’t a yearly job — but it’s the step that makes paint look deep again.
A ceramic coating
Cures into a hard, slick layer that makes a surface easier to clean and holds its finish for years instead of weeks. It goes on paint, on wheels, and on leather and vinyl inside. On paint it won’t stop a scratch; that’s what paint protection film is for.

How I help

Maybe you wash it yourself, or the dealer handles it, or you’ve been quoted less elsewhere, or nothing yet. Here’s where I pick up in each case.
If you wash it yourself
Keep doing it. Washing keeps a car clean, which is a different job from taking swirls out of the clear coat and putting protection over the top. After that, washing gets easier: dirt lets go instead of gripping.
If your dealer offers it
A dealer’s detail is scheduled around moving cars off a lot. Mine is scheduled around one car.
If you’ve found someone cheaper
You probably have. Ask them what’s included and how long it takes, then compare it to this page. That’s where price differences live, and it’s a fair question to ask me too.
If you’re not doing anything yet
Most people aren’t, and nothing bad happens tomorrow. Paint that’s corrected once and then kept up stays worth more and stays nicer to get into than paint that waits.

Who’s working on your car

I’m Andrew Herman. Twenty years in automotive paint and refinishing, and a former I-CAR Platinum designation, the role-specific training recognition earned by individual collision repair technicians. Your car gets that same standard, mostly in steps you never see.
A higher standard of detail
Twenty years matching factory paint on collision repairs, where a panel that didn’t match came back off the car. Nothing in detailing is that unforgiving, so your car gets more care than the job strictly asks for.
Nothing gets ground into your paint
Brake dust bonds into the clear coat and washing won’t lift it. An iron remover dissolves it and clay pulls out the rest, before any polish touches a panel. Skipped, that grit gets dragged across your paint.
The finish you see is the real one
Polishing leaves oils behind that make paint look corrected when it isn’t. A wipe with 90% alcohol strips them off, so what you inspect is the actual finish, and the coating bonds to paint instead of residue.
